Digitscrappin' Stuff

I feel like I did a little bit of everything this weekend.... A little bit of knitting, a little bit of digiscrapping, a little bit of spinning, a little bit of playing video games, a little bit of reading (gasp!) and in the end, accomplished very little. But tis the nature of taking a med holiday. Eye-wink

I was going to take some pictures of my craftiness, but alas.... My camera ran out of battery power, so now the batteries are charging, so all I have to show right now is the digiscrapping I've done.

I'm not entirely sure how thrilled I am with the last one... but I was feeling a bit experimental, so I used Photoshop CS2 for it...

Normally, I have no patience whatsoever with this sort of thing so I use iScrapbook, a program for the Mac that's very drag-and-drop and point-and-click oriented... The drawback to iScrapbook is it only has very very basic editing capabilities. For example, the cropping capabilities in iScrapbook are extremely limited... you can only really do rectangular shapes, which for this final layout wasn't going to work because I needed two circular photos to work with the quickpage I used in the layout.

I learned a few new tricks with this one... Like what layer masks are, and how to use them (not sure if I was doing things the most efficient way, but it worked)...

I suppose the end result is that I've resolved myself to start learning Photoshop better than I do. Considering that I do work in the web industry, it could never hurt to be a little more proficient, and the whole digital scrapbooking thing doesn't seem like a bad place to start.

Super Cute!

Your layouts came out super cute :) I just LOVE the wedding one - but I loves me some pink and black too! I use Photoshop for my digi scrapping. I was considering getting iScrapbook but I like to tweak EVERYTHING and if I can't do that with the iScrap I don't want it. I think graphic design and digi-scrapping go hand in hand :)

iScrapbook has it's

iScrapbook has it's advantages and it's disadvantages... The advantage to it is it integrates with iPhoto, and has a "favorites" section where you can import in kits that you've downloaded... which is very nice for just browsing through what you have when you're working on something, since it's right next to your layout... It's pretty quick and easy to see if something's going to complement what you're working on, and if it is... you can just drag and drop it in....

The functionality that does exist in iScrapbook is really easy to use... It's *ALL* drag and drop, and since you don't have to open every individual element before you use it, your workspace doesn't get cluttered the way that Photoshop does...

The disadvantage is there are a lot of stuff missing that would be really useful to have... Like, there's no way to crop out a circle, and there's no way to do something like a layer mask where you remove part of an image... Those are the top two that seem to be drawing me to Photoshop occasionally.

I think my biggest frustration with using Photoshop is the absence of some sort easy way to browse images I have available while I'm working... I don't want my scrapbooking stuff mixed into iPhoto because that's where I keep my photos and I want things completely separate... The closest thing I've found to working is I have a program on my Linux box called gThumb which I've made albums for all of my sets, and since I have the same file structure on both computers, I can look it up on the Linux box and then go grab it on the Mac... but the only problem with that is my monitors on both machines don't display the same as far as color goes, so sometimes I end up looking at stuff that I thought I could use but then can't cause the colors clash or something. I wish I liked The GIMP better, otherwise I'd be more inclined to use that... but there's something wonky about layering in The GIMP that I can't seem to figure out...

But anyway, I guess I just tend to pick the tool that seems to be the best for what I'm trying to do... if it's just straightfoward placing images and resizing, usually I'll go with iScrapbook.... just cause it's faster.
